The challenge
The existing tanks at Nordic Storage were heated by steam-based heat exchangers that required upgrading. Electric heating offers several advantages, and for many operators, precise temperature control, reduced temperature fluctuations, lower energy consumption, and improved product quality are key factors. By installing thermowells or heater nozzles through the tank wall, the heating elements can also be replaced easily without the need to empty the tank, reducing maintenance costs and minimizing operational downtime.
The solution
Nordic Storage AB selected Proxll to upgrade the heating system at its Malmö facility. The project was managed by Jernbro Industrial Services AB, acting as the main contractor.
Proxll supplied an electric heating system for two existing storage tanks, including engineering, sizing, manufacturing, and delivery. The solution was developed by Proxll to maintain oil at 50-60°C under Nordic climatic conditions, ensuring reliable operation and stable product temperatures throughout the year.
Scope of delivery included:
- Engineering and thermal design of the system
- Supply of a total of 12 specially developed steatite-based heating elements (cartridges) for high operating temperatures, including junction boxes.
- Control Panel and Temperature Sensors
- Documentation, installation, and final inspection
The result
Proxll’s heating solution for Nordic Storage’s tanks in Malmö ensures stable year-round oil storage. Natural convection provides an almost uniform product temperature throughout the entire tank. Proxll utilizes specially developed heating elements with low surface loading and even heat distribution, reducing the risk of product degradation and coke formation, even during continuous operation. By utilizing existing thermowells/dip pipes together with Proxll’s steatite-based heating elements, Nordic Storage has implemented a robust and durable heating solution that contributes to:
